Part of this post is a simple bug workaround for a hardware cursor bug.
do include OPTION "SWcursor" "True" in your xorg.conf and voila .

See that corruption ? no more after that tweak.
Once one is past that and a many little quirks , radeonhd is a rather nice and stable driver that i do recommend
for the normal desktop user.The steps to install are quite well explained in a number of how-to's that are easy
to find.I wont repeat it here.Suffice it to say that on gentoo it works quite easily.
